About Smiths Auctions

In 1918 Henry Cooper Smith founded Smiths Auctions in Christchurch, New Zealand. Then known as The City Market, they auctioned grain, produce, livestock and general goods. Seventy-three years later his grandson Colin Smith and long time Auction Manager Robert Hunter took over the running of Smiths Auctions.

As owners and auctioneers, Robert and Colin continued the tradition of service that has made Smiths Auctions the trusted name in auctions. In 2007 on the retirement of Colin Smith, Robert Hunter took over full ownership. To this day Smiths Auctions trade to the same values as they did way back in 1918.
